OCC is a registered nonprofit organisation active in both Barcelona (Spain) and Polykastro (Greece), working towards the inclusion of refugees and migrants through educational and cultural activities. We work mainly with volunteers to offer language classes, technical workshops, sports activities, cultural events, and women and children’s support. At the same time, we work on an international level with many European partners to increase our social impact.
OCC (Open Cultural Center) is a non profit organization that develops educational and cultural programs in Greek camps and in city centers where vulnerable refugees are being housed. We base everything we do on the communitys imput and community-determined needs. Our teachers come from the refugee, Greek and volunteer communities. Courses include math, english, german, arts, etc. We also provide asylum information and free legal aid.

At OCC, many of our projects are based on creating (physical) “safe spaces”. This term generally refers to “a place in which a person or a particular group of people can know that they will be free from harm or criticism” (Oxford Dictionary).
One example is the Community Cafeteria at OCC Greece, where everyone from any background is more than welcome. The Cafeteria is a place to disconnect and get to know other people, play games, meet the volunteers, escape from the stressful environment of the Nea Kavala camp, etc. It is a center of cultural exchange.
The Cafeteria is open from 10:00 to 2:00 pm and from 5:00 pm to 8:00 pm every day from Monday to Friday. It offers free tea, coffee, board games, books, and internet connection. Drop by the office of OCC Greece to visit it!
