Meow Dear Catlovers,
Last week, we gathered to protest against the proposed changes to the animal protection law on the Canary Islands.
Just last year, a new law was introduced, assigning responsibility for urban cat populations to the municipalities. The primary tasks of the municipalities include:
✅️ Registering and monitoring cat colonies
✅️ Microchipping the cats
✅️ Prohibiting the relocation of established colonies
✅️ Implementing the “Trap-Neuter-Return” method
✅️ Euthanasia only in cases of illness
❗️The EL CAPITÁN project is working closely with two municipalities on Fuerteventura. This collaboration is built on mutual trust and is an important step for animal welfare. ❗️
⚡️ But we are here to take a clear stand against the current plans of the Canary government to change this law! ⚡️
❌️ The proposed changes would mean: ❌️
Classifying cats as an invasive species
Removing ALL cats from designated nature reserves
▶️ We are deeply concerned and want to express our dismay and opposition through this demonstration.
A huge thank you to everyone who raised their voice for the cats.
Meanwhile our dear Edolfi had to have both ear flaps amputated today due to skin cancer. Cryotherapy was applied to her nose, as it too has been affected by skin cancer.
We hope he will be well soon.
We love all animals and, of course, also care for sick hedgehogs when they cross our path—because every life is precious.
Last but not least, our El Capitan Charity Calendar is also available again, with lots of gorgeous Pictures of Fuerteventuras Cats.
Thank you for your help and support
Mirjam and Julia
Meow Dear Catlovers,
we continue to stay active, lending our helping hands to many wonderful initiatives, such as:
Puerto del Rosario hosted its first-ever animal protection event, offering a variety of activities such as a walk, informational sessions on animal care, and presentations of dogs in need of homes. Among the participants was EL CAPITÁN, which shared its efforts in cat protection and set up a booth to engage with attendees. The event was a success, and we look forward to its return next year.
The positive energy carried over to the Aldiana Club Fuerteventura, where we had a fantastic time with fellow animal protection enthusiasts. The day began with an educational session for the children of the Flosse Club, who learned about cats before embarking on an expedition across the club’s expansive grounds. Despite the afternoon heat, the young explorers were thrilled to encounter three furry friends.
Later, the adult guests participated in a more in-depth exploration of cat protection efforts on Fuerteventura. Our founder delivered an engaging presentation titled “Sun, Beach, and Stray Cats,” shedding light on the challenges and solutions for protecting the island’s feline population.
Thanks to you we can continue what we do.
Best regards,
Mirjam
Meow dear Cat Lovers,
the challenges we have faced in recent months have been immense, which makes us all the more grateful for your unwavering support.
Every euro you contribute plays a vital role in improving the lives of cats on Fuerteventura. Each donation, no matter how small, helps us provide food, shelter, and medical care, ultimately saving precious cat lives. Your generosity truly makes a difference.
We cannot thank you enough for standing by us and being a part of this mission. Together, we are creating a brighter, safer future for these wonderful animals.
With heartfelt thanks and purring regards,
Mirjam
Meow dear Cat Lovers,
thanks to your support here in the Teaming group, we are able to cover part of the veterinary costs for this stray cat. She suffers from skin cancer, which is why her ear had to be amputated. These cats need our help—not just in the form of food, but also through urgently needed veterinary care. Thank you for helping us care for the welfare of the stray cats in Fuerteventura!
Hopefully, we can gain even more Teaming members in the future. Every euro makes a difference. Thank you!
Mirjam
INTERNATIONAL CAT DAY
International Cat Day, celebrated on August 8th, is a special occasion dedicated to raising awareness about the welfare of cats worldwide. For us, EL CAPITÁN animal project, this day holds particular significance, as it shines a light on the ongoing efforts to protect and care for the cats of Fuerteventura.
Fuerteventura, with its rugged landscapes and unique environment, is home to many stray and feral cats. These cats often face harsh conditions, including food scarcity, disease, and a lack of proper shelter. EL CAPITÁN animal project is deeply committed to improving the lives of these cats through rescue, care, and adoption initiatives.
One of the core missions of EL CAPITÁN is to reduce the number of stray cats on the island through humane methods. This includes Trap-Neuter-Return (TNR) programs, which help control the cat population while ensuring that these animals can continue to live in their natural environment without contributing to overpopulation. Additionally, our organization provides medical care, vaccinations, and necessary treatments to cats in need, improving their quality of life and chances for adoption.
International Cat Day is an opportunity for EL CAPITÁN to highlight the importance of responsible cat ownership and the need for community support in protecting Fuerteventura’s feline population. We encourage locals and visitors alike to consider adopting cats from their shelters, giving these animals a second chance at a loving home.
Whether you’re a resident of Fuerteventura or a visitor who has fallen in love with the island’s feline inhabitants, International Cat Day is a perfect time to support EL CAPITÁN animal project. By contributing to our mission, you’re helping to ensure a better future for the cats of Fuerteventura, one filled with care, love, and protection.
**Saharan Wind and Heat on Fuerteventura: Our Measures for the Cats**
Summer on Fuerteventura is showing its extreme side. The hot Calima wind from the Sahara sweeps across the island, making it hard to breathe for both humans and animals. Our cats are also suffering under these extreme conditions.
Our feline friends in the cat enclosures are having a hard time with these oppressive temperatures. To provide them some relief, we are doing everything we can to create a comfortable environment. Fans are running at full speed, and cool, wet towels are hung up to cool the air a bit and add some humidity. Also laying or rolling up on a wet towel makes a cool difference.
The situation is particularly concerning for our old and health-compromised cats. For them, the heat becomes an unbearable ordeal. To provide immediate relief, we have equipped the outdoor enclosure of our senior cats with a large sunshade that provides much-needed shade.
At our PUNTO de GATOS, we ensure that there is always fresh and sufficient water available for the cats. We regularly check the water and food bowls to make sure they are always well filled, ensuring the cats can stay hydrated and fed.
A curious detail on the side: sometimes the cats are attracted to the chlorinated water from the hotel pools and lap it up. :-) Surprisingly, they seem to enjoy it and it doesn't seem to harm them. Attached you find a Pic of one Cutie
With these measures, we hope to make the hot days on Fuerteventura more bearable for our cats and provide them with the best possible protection against the oppressive heat.
As always thank you for your support and help! It’s much appreciated and never took for granted.
Meow from the Cats of Fuerteventura and El Capitan
Hallo catlovers,
It’s been quite a while you haven’t heart from me though I owe you all the news going on on Fuerteventura.
I could do with a Co-partner posting here on the Teaming platform. Any reliable volunteers?
We are inundated with abandoned kittens and are struggling to find foster homes or permanent homes on the island. The need is high and our vet bills are exploding. Your benefit as a Teamer is essential for our charity work. I can’t stress that often enough.
Thank you ever so much and stay tuned.

Not only is the weather hot on the island. Our current situation is also extremely dicey. Every day we receive reports and cries for help. Kittens and injured animals keep appearing out of nowhere. They are hungry, full of parasites and the heat is also getting to them.
But even worse, most of these animals are too young to be spayed or neutered. Our few foster homes are full to the brim, our intake capacities are exhausted. And what are we to do with 12-week-old feral kittens?
The cat problem continues inexorably every day - so we must take action now!
Luckily there are you, people with a big heart for our feline friends in Fuerteventura. So there is hope!
Thank you for supporting the street, neglected, abandoned, feral cats on Fuerteventura. Times are tough for everyone at the moment. Every Euro is so importnat to change the lifes of the cats to the better.
The photo shows CARBOL one of our handicats.
This is his story:
Our helper Monica was on her way back from the airport. She had just checked in a cat that had found a new home in Germany. It is a sad but at the same time beautiful experience when a protégé has managed to win people over.
Suddenly Monica had to put on the brakes. Several kittens were running disoriented in zigzag lines across the country road. It quickly became clear: they had been abandoned at the rubbish containers there.
Monica did not hesitate and took the helpless kittens with her. They were covered in parasites and had severe cat cold. It was not clear if they would survive. And whether we could save their eyes. Three of the kittens were particularly badly affected.
After many treatment intervals and 1,000 eye drops later, the three problem children have developed very well. Unfortunately, we could not save Carbol's eye, it had to be surgically removed.
The cats have been in our care for 1 year in September and it is high time that they start a new life. A life in the flat with people who play with them and cuddle with them. People who have time for them and see them as part of the family. Out of the enclosure and into the palace. And preferably with an enclosed balcony. And not as a single cat, please. Preferably as a trio - which is almost utopian -. But then please in pairs or with another active cat.
P.S. The trio moves like non-sighted cats. They don't need pity, but affection and encouragement.
It's 8 August 2022 - World Cat Day.
Whether mackerel, coloured, black, white, short-haired, long-haired, chubby, graceful: cats come in many shapes and colours. You can get them everywhere: from the farm, from breeders, from hobby breeders, from illegal animal traffickers.
We clearly prefer cats from local animal shelters and from reputable associations. There is no need to "produce" cats when so many velvet paws are waiting for a home in animal shelters at home and abroad.
For us, every day is cat day. Every day we take care of sick, injured but also healthy cats. 24/7, without a break, tirelessly. And yet it is never enough. Time and again we reach our financial limits. And also to our physical and psychological limits. The individual cat fates do not let us go, haunt us in our sleep. The insults hurt and don't always bounce off.
Thank you for the great support, some of which has existed for years. Without them, without YOU, we would not make it.
With cat-friendly greetings,
Mirjam
Half-time: an overview
The first 6 months of the year have flown by. What have we achieved so far?
Almost 350 cats have been neutered and more than 380 have received veterinary treatment.
This is a great collective achievement of which we are all very proud. Another 6 months lie ahead of us.
With you by our side, we look forward optimistically to the second part of 2022.
Thank you for your loyal support.
Dear teamers and cat lovers
These 5 cats from the Playitas Resort and about 500 other felines are waiting for their daily food.
The surprising price increase for the 10 kg bag of cat food by about 3 euros earlier this year is a challeging news. That is an unexpected additional cost of 3,600 euros. You have already donated a lot and only about 1,000 Euros are still missing. I am optimistic that we will be able to raise this amount.
It would be fatal to take the additional food costs out of the castration budget or to save on emergency treatments. The need for neutering is increasing and so is the number of emergency cats. It's just never ending.
Thank you for your loyal support,
Mirjam

Please spread the word to find more Teamers so that we can keep on saving lifes.
Our charity video shows all aspects of our help for stray cats on Fuerteventura.
Watch for yourself.
Dear Teamers and Friends of EL CAPITÁN
With your support we could already neuter more than 170 cats from January till now.
170 cats who won't produce unwanted kittens.
170 cats who don't need to mate and breed.
170 cats who have now the chance to live a healthier and longer life.
You all are heroes.
Thank you in the name of the street cats in Fuerteventura.
