Happiness is a Kong filled with peanut butter!
These little bundles of fluff are a few of the many, many guinea pigs currently living at the sanctuary. They came to us from a hoarder who had no idea how many she had, didn't not look after them at all, and was just going to release into the wild if we didn't take them. Of course, many were pregnant when they turned up, but we have become experts in identifying their gender and keeping them separate! Thanks to your support they have a safe, warm home with plenty of good food! Thank you x
Welcome new teamers! Thank you so much for taking the time to sign up to give €1 a month. Hopefully it doesn't feel like much to you individually, but it makes such a massive difference to us when you add it all together. We cannot survive without a regular income, so from all the garden folk in our care - THANK YOU!
This is the magnificent Duchess. As previously shared with you, she has cancer and we were very worried about her after she stopped standing. After a lot of (expensive) medication, 24 hour care, physiotherapy and help with a hoist, she finally got to her feet. She then took the opportunity to escape the barn and take a walk around the village! She is now back in the meadow with her friends, enjoying the autumn sun. Your continued support helps us give this level of intensive care to our animals to allow them to live their lives out free of pain, fear and misery. Thank you!

This is what we use your money for! This will feed some of our animals - 5 cows, 3 horses, 9 sheep, 1 naughty goat, 12 pigs and 30 birds - for 2 weeks. This doesn’t include hay, fresh food, or what we use to feed the dogs, guinea pigs or hares. Thank you for joining our teaming group, this makes a real difference to us xx
The beautiful Duchess (white cow) is not well at the moment. Blood tests shows her liver is failing, probably because of the cancer we know she has. She is on strong medication, is comfortable inside the barn with her best friend Princess and is eating well. She was our first resident - a victim of the dairy industry - and taught us so much about how wonderful cows are. She may not have long left, and we will make sure she does not suffer. Your kind monthly donations ensure we can do whatever we can to give animals like Duchess the life and love they deserve. Thank you
Thank you to everyone who has joined recently. As you may have seen Big V sanctuary is in trouble, but having regular support will make a difference. Please share and support in any way you can xx Merci à tous ceux qui nous ont rejoints récemment. Comme vous l'avez peut-être constaté, le sanctuaire de Big V est en difficulté, mais le fait d'avoir un soutien régulier fera la différence. Merci de partager et de soutenir de quelque manière que ce soit xx
Thank you to all our teamers! Please keep spreading this group as much as you can - a little help from all you lovely individuals makes such a difference X
Duchess is still undergoing medication for cancer. She has shown a small sign of improvement, we are trying to remain level headed and not get our hopes up. She is not particularly fond of us coming and prodding and poking her everyday, but she is doing her best to ignore us.
Because the cancer is in her eye, we have to keep her in the barn for the forseable future, as sunlight will exacerbate the problem. So that she doesn't stress too much, the other cows have been kept inside with her. This means our straw and hay remain at wintertime needs and costs.
Can you help us to support our cows being inside? Are you in the position to sponsor one of them? No amount is too little, we really are desperate. The hording case has turned into a financial nightmare. The extra costs of keeping our herds inside are frightening, and of course we didn't know Duchess was going to get cancer. Nor were we able to predict what would happen with the outbreak. All of our cows are in need of sponsors. Duchess, Princess, Rupert, Dick and Jack. Please, please get in touch.
Here Teddy is doing a great impression of nearly every human around the world - hiding. If only it were that easy to not take responsibility for our actions. All Teddy has done is pinched Bess and Little Beans apples and is now pretending to be invisible. He is an amazing little character.
Jerome giving Luna her first hourly session of physio today. Luna is in need of sponsors. If you would like to learn more about how Luna's came to be with us and her journey you can find it on our website, http://www.bigvsanctuary.com/cows/luna/ and in more detail on "The Big V Blog" tab at the top right of the page. For more information on Luna's care needs and progress please contact us at bigvsanctuary@outlook.com
After a long day of caring for the garden folk, the human folk closed the end of the day together. Jacket potatoes on the fire and log sparklers ; archery, hide and seek and tall tales of phantoms and werewolves. Listening to the frogs start to call for mates in the lake while watching the super moon. Bats dipping above our heads, while the owls hoot and the peacocks call out their melancholy goodnight.
The lockdown doesn't change our human lives ; we are used to being isolated. From one month to the next we don't go out to bars or restaurants. Our lives revolve around the needs of the folk in our care, from the smallest to the large, we listen and watch. Our days start before dawn, in the darkness and finish on or after the sun dips below the horizon. The children aren't phased by what may come, or if the shops run out of food. As parents and guardians of so many, Jerome and I are only concerned with everyone's wellbeing.
We are enjoying the extra quietness of the world, the skies left undisturbed. The growing confidence of the wildlife around us. The air is cleaner, sweeter ; a noticeable lack of chemical spray and noxious car fumes. Our dream is that lessons can be learned and that compassion can be awakened, while people are locked away. May the human animal set forth again into a world, more quietly than before, with more reverence for the beauty of the home they depend on and all that inhabit within.
Thank you to all our new joiners - please spread this far and wide so that we can build up the monthly fund for this amazing cause! xx

Thank you again for being one of 'the best people'!
Welcome to Big V Sanctuary! In these pages we would like to invite you into our world and share with you the lives of those who live here - both human and nonhuman. We will share with you our hopes and dreams and the passions which drive our every action in caring for all our residents.
You have our deepest gratitude for choosing to support our sanctuary and helping us to care for our precious residents. Thank you for being one of ‘the best people’!
The little fellow in the photo is "Teddy" so named for his nature.Teddy is a cross mangalitsa-duroc pig. He is the brother of Little Bean and Bess, who you will get to meet later on. He came to us from an organic, free-range farm, so had never been treated for anything at all so when he first arrived he was hideously covered in lice, to the point that touching him, they would run up your arm. He was slightly underweight, but very loving.
Teddy has grown into a magnificent little man of around 90 kilos. He will be the first person to come if you sit in the garden, he will come and lie on you. He is incredibly loving, and very protective of the other animals, not necessarily the pigs, so when there is a fight in the garden, he will stand between the birds that are fighting and play referee.
Teddy’s favourite snack is peaches and pears, although he will do a little run around and yelp for a biscuit. We have never taught him to do it, but he gets very excited for a biscuit. He is the most gentle. It must be said that boars are always maligned as being aggressive and dangerous and we find that actually the boars are more easily handled and more gentle than the sows.
